On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry provided a rare update on the casualties suffered by the country’s armed forces during the ongoing military offensive in Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, during the special military operation, there were casualties among our comrades-in-arms. To date, 1,351 servicemen have died and 3,825 have been injured,” said Deputy Chief of State- Russian Major, Colonel General Sergey Rudskoy, at a press briefing.

The official did not provide any figures on soldiers potentially missing in action or taken prisoner amid the conflict. The Ukrainian side suffered heavy casualties (around 30,000) over the past month, Rudskoy said. According to Russian army It is estimated that around 14,000 Ukrainian soldiers were killed and another 16,000 were injured.

The Ukrainian army suffered significant material losses, with nearly 1,600 tanks and other armored vehicles destroyed, he said, adding that the Russian offensive had largely destroyed kyiv’s air and anti-aircraft forces, while its navy has effectively ceased to exist.

The official casualty figures provided by the Russian military differ radically from the estimates on the Ukrainian side. According to the latest claims from Kyiv, around 16,000 Russian soldiers were killed in the conflict, and hundreds of tanks, armored vehicles and artillery pieces were destroyed.

kyiv, however, remains silent about its own victims. The most recent figure was announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky in mid-March, when he said around 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers had died in combat.

Moscow sent troops to Ukraine in late February, after a seven-year standoff over kyiv’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements and Russia’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The Minsk Protocol negotiated by Germany and France was designed to regularize the status of regions within the Ukrainian state.

Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join NATO. kyiv insists the Russian offensive was unprovoked and has denied claims it planned to retake the two republics by force.
