I’m as single as they come right now.

No suitors, no flirtations, no tissues or panky; not even a hookup buddy in sight!

As a result, many people suggested I “sign up for one of the trillions of dating apps?”

Here’s why dating apps and online dating in general freak me out.

This whole Jeffrey Dahmer documentary on Netflix reminded me that just because dating apps are there doesn’t mean I have to use them.

It scares me that someone could be so poorly wired and yet not be taken for over a decade.

I know what you’re thinking, “he didn’t lure his victims online?”

After you meet someone online, what usually happens? You go to a nearby bar or restaurant to meet in person to see if there is a real connection.

Guess where Jeffrey lured his victims? That’s right, the bar.

Online dating ensures that people, like Jeffrey, will have someone at the bar waiting for them specifically.

Jeffrey was able to hide his true intentions from dozens of victims. To me, relying on my senses when I only get a few texts seems risky.

Part of that also has to do with the fact that I’ve had a bad experience with online dating before.

“What’s new?”

‘Not too much. Just got home from work. U?’

You would never know that this exact online exchange almost resulted in me having to file a restraining order years ago.

People like that, the one I met, someone like Dahmer, are really good at hiding their true selves. They are also very good at concealing their horrible intentions.

Online dating makes it easy to hide that secret identity just long enough until it’s too late.

Jeffrey Dahmer ate the hearts of his victims. It’s not a metaphor. It was the physical act he was performing.

Am I too careful? Yes.

But I’d rather be overly cautious than regret these kinds of situations.

If online dating is for you, by all means: swipe, love, super love away.

But Jeffrey Dahmer was clearly miswired and others might be too.

Just be safe.

Because Jeffrey Dahmer is not the only killer:

WATCH: See how much gas it cost the year you started driving

To learn more about how gas prices have changed over the years, Stacker calculated the cost of a gallon of gas for each of the last 84 years. Using Bureau of Labor Statistics data (published April 2020), we analyzed the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline from 1976 to 2020 as well as the consumer price index (CPI) for regular unleaded gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover how much a gallon cost when you first started driving.
